RHINOPLASTY TYPES
There are different types of rhinoplasty techniques designed to meet a range of needs for the nose such as reducing the size of the nose, augmenting the appearance of the nose, removing the hump on the nose, giving a better tip definition, correcting alar retraction issues, altering particular ethnic traits, correcting the nose after post-trauma and also treating a deviated septum or nasal fractures…
The type of the incision is determined by the surgeon to categorize the rhinoplasty procedure under 2 different techniques: open or closed. The only difference between open and closed rhinoplasty is the 5mm transcolumellar incision. Open rhinoplasty provides an incision on the columella between the nostrils, while closed rhinoplasty provides an incision on the interior part of the nose. As open rhinoplasty technique exposes the tip structure better, open rhinoplasty is preferred more often especially on deviated nose cases, this would help to achieve better results easier as the nose is demonstrated through all angles.
RHINOPLASTY SWELLING
Swelling and bruising are common side effects of Rhinoplasty. It usually takes a full year for the residual swelling to resolve and the final result will be settled by then. Recovery time depends on the patient’s anatomy and skin quality, plus the technique used. During the first week, it’s normal to have moderate swelling. Usually, by the end of the second week, swelling will subside. The nose will still look swollen or puffy for up to 3-4 months.
It’s important to use cold compresses in the initial days of your recovery, and also the surgeon will inform the patient about the approach he/she will be using specifically for that case in order to end up with the best and most successful result. The patient must sleep on their backs and keep their heads elevated for a few weeks following surgery to avoid placing any pressure on the nose.
RHINOPLASTY RECOVERY TIME
Rhinoplasty recovery time depends on the type of rhinoplasty performed and anatomical factors as well. For both open and closed procedures, downtime is typically around 8-14 days. While initial recovery is generally quick, healing can continue for the next one to three years.
- In the first week, there will be swelling and bruising around the nose&face area.
- 7 days after surgery, the cast and sutures are removed. The inner splints are removed on the 3rd post op date.
- After 7 to 10 days patients can go back to their daily life routine.
- Over the next 2-3 months, the nasal swelling will reduce more.
- In 3 month healing period, the patient will start to appreciate the improvements on the nose.
- By 6 months, the patient will be 70 healed.
- By 12 months, the patient will be technically 100 healed.
RHINOPLASTY RECOVERY
During recovery period, the patient can expect to have some headache after Rhinoplasty surgery. The surgeon will prescribe the patient to take pain medication and antibiotics for the first week of the surgery.
During the first 24 hours following surgery, it is important to keep the head elevated. The patient needs to rest as much as possible after a procedure like rhinoplasty as it is quite tiring. Using small, light ice packs on the eyes and cheeks for 15 minutes every hour, will help to reduce swelling. Bleeding is also common, especially in the first 48 hours of recovery. Showering is okay as long as the patient keeps their faces away from the water.
Most patients return to work or school 7-9 days after surgery. You may fly back home 7 days after surgery.
Please stop consuming the following in order to minimize the bleeding during operation:
– 10 days before the operation: Aspirin and any other tablets containing Acetyl Salycilic Acid or other anticoagulants, Vitamin E
– 7 days before the operation: Alcoholic beverages and green tea
Drinking a lot of water will also speed up the healing process.
The most annoying symptom after rhinoplasty is congestion. Until the internal swelling in your nose slowly subsides, this is going to be experienced in the first few weeks.
Wearing glasses can put pressure on the bridge or the sidewalls of the nose, that’s why the patient should not wear glasses until 1st month of healing process is completed. The patient should keep the weight off of the nose.
It is not recommended to lift heavy things and do heavy exercises within the first 2 weeks after the operation. The patient can start doing cardio exercises in two weeks. However, he/she had to wait for 4 weeks before starting heavy exercises, pilates or doing fitness. Swimming in the sea or pool is not recommended in the first 2 weeks.
RHINOPLASTY REVISION
Rhinoplasty takes a full year to heal. It’s recommended to wait after 12 months from the original rhinoplasty in order to see all post-surgical problems. Revision rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure that is done for complications or undesired results. Even though our revision rate is crystal clear, around the globe in general, 5–15 of rhinoplasties are revised. Revision rhinoplasty can correct aesthetic and functional issues like breathing problems, nasal bridge imbalance or tip deformity. A revision rhinoplasty is more complex compared to a standard rhinoplasty. We should not forget the fact that, there can be unforeseen abnormalities or complex issues that need to be addressed.
Revision rhinoplasty is most commonly performed via the open rhinoplasty technique, which allows the surgeon to have a better access and visibility. The surgeon may need to cut and reposition or remove the bone. The procedure starts with a tiny incision on the bridge of nasal tissue at the base of the nose. Then, the surgeon separates the skin from the cartilage and bone and later, he/she proceeds to reshape the total shape&tip of the nose. The surgery is performed under general anesthesia, and it usually takes around two-three hours to be completed. The recovery that follows revision rhinoplasty is similar to that of primary rhinoplasty.
RHINOPLASTY ON WIDE NOSE
Rhinoplasty on wide nose cases, usually require combination of the bone and cartilage techniques. Techniques can include maneuvers like osteotomies or building up a low bridge. To narrow the nasal bones, the surgeon will apply bone cuts which are called osteotomies. And after narrowing the nasal bones, the surgeon will plan to place a thinner piece of cartilage along the bridge to make it look thinner. The procedure is performed under general anesthesia with open type of rhinoplasty.
